Orange Chocolate Marble Loaf

There’s something very satisfying about a marble loaf. It’s honestly one of those baking hacks that make your cake look fancy without really all that much work. This Orange Chocolate Marble Loaf combines two excellent flavors and swirls them into a beautiful marble loaf that looks extravagant and tastes more so.

I’m a recent convert to the flavor church of orange and dark chocolate. But, ever since I’ve come around to enjoying this flavor, I’ve made Dark Chocolate Orange Brownies and Dark Chocolate Orange Mousse (No Eggs), both of which turned out exceptional.

What You’ll Need

This loaf starts with one main orange batter that gets divided into two. One half stays orange-forward, and we add the chocolate flavors to the the other half.

For the main batter:

  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Orange zest
  • Orange juice
  • Neutral oil
  • Cocoa powder – so we have a rich and deeply flavorful chocolate profile
  • Flour
  • Baking powder

For the chocolate half of the batter, we will add cocoa powder and just a little extra orange juice.

Don’t Skip Zesting Into the Sugar

Before anything else, zest your orange(s) directly into the sugar and rub together well with your fingers or a spatula.

This step is very important and does two things:

  1. It releases the natural oils from the zest
  2. It makes the sugar intensely fragrant

You’ll smell the difference immediately. This step helps the orange flavor carry through the entire loaf a lot more evenly and definitely at a stronger level.

How This Marble Loaf Comes Together

Once the sugar and zest are combined, the rest of the batter is straightforward. You will add the eggs and oil in and whisk well until the mixture is light and fluffy. Next, you will add the flour, orange juice, and baking powder.

Once that is all folded in and combined into a smooth base batter, you will divide your batter in half. One half stays as-is for the orange layer, and cocoa powder plus extra orange juice are mixed into the other half to create the chocolate batter.

Next, you will spoon both batters into a lined loaf pan in alternating layers. You can gently swirl them with a knife if you like, but even simple layering gives you a beautiful marble effect.

Optional: Add Chocolate Ganache

If you want to elevate your orange chocolate marble loaf even more, make a simple chocolate ganache and add it on top. You have to make sure your loaf has fully cooled down before adding the ganache (which can prove to be quite hard because you will be tempted to eat it immediately).

For the chocolate ganache, simple take equal parts chocolate and heavy cream. I used dark 70% chocolate but you can use milk as well. Add your cream and chocolate to a bowl and use the double boiler method or microwave in bursts of 10-15 seconds until the chocolate melts fully.

Mix well and set aside to cool before spreading it over your loaf.

This Orange Chocolate Marble Loaf is one of those dependable recipes you’ll come back to again and again. It’s so delicious and an instant crowd pleaser. Besides, it smells divine and will have your entire kitchen (if not home) smelling intensely delicious.

If you’re already a fan of chocolate and orange together, this one’s a no-brainer.
