Dark Chocolate Orange Brownies

Chocolate and orange is one of those flavor combinations that people either love deeply or… haven’t tried properly yet. These Chocolate Orange Brownies sit right between rich, fudgy chocolate and bright citrus. They are warm and fragrant, and honestly smell so divine. Honestly, I have not always been the biggest fan of orange and chocolate (or even a fan at all). But I am very much a fan of brownies, especially the deeply decadent and fudgy kind.

Dark Chocolate Orange Brownies

I wanted to add a colorful twist of flavor to my regular batch of brownies. It is the season of all things citrine after all.

This recipe comes together quickly, uses simple ingredients, and the orange really lifts the entire brownie without overpowering it. Think of it as a classic brownie, but with a little glow-up.

What You’ll Need

Dark Chocolate Orange Brownies

This recipe uses straight-forward ingredients with no fuss:

  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Orange zest + orange juice – make sure to use fresh, nothing beats the fresh real deal.
  • Butter – be sure to melt it
  • Dark chocolate – I used 70%, you can also use milk chocolate
  • Cocoa powder – so we have a rich and deeply flavorful chocolate profile
  • Flour

The Trick That Makes All the Difference

Here’s a small step that really elevates the flavor profile of everything.

Instead of zesting your orange directly into the batter, add the orange zest into the sugar first. Then use your fingers to rub them together for about a minute.

What this does:

  • Releases the essential oils from the zest
  • Deepens the orange aroma
  • Makes the sugar fragrant
  • Infuses the citrus flavor more evenly throughout the brownies

It’s a tiny extra step, but you will really notice the difference in the flavor and overall scent (of your brownies AND your kitchen).

How to Make Dark Chocolate Orange Brownies

Step 1: Prep the orange sugar
Add the orange zest to your cup of sugar. Rub them together between your fingers until the sugar feels slightly damp and smells strong and citrusy.

Step 2: Whip the eggs & sugar
Whisk the eggs and the orange sugar together until the mixture becomes pale and slightly thick.

Step 3: Add the melted ingredients
Melt the butter with your dark chocolate and combine the melted ingredients with the egg-sugar batter. Whisk well, and then add the orange juice.

Step 4: Add the dry ingredients
Mix in the cocoa powder and flour. Stir until just combined — don’t overmix.

Step 5: Bake
Pour the batter into a lined baking dish and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 22–28 minutes, depending on how fudgy you want the center. A slightly soft middle is perfect for this recipe.

What Makes These Brownies Special

  • Mixing the orange zest with the sugar
  • Adding both cocoa powder and dark chocolate
  • The longer they last, the better they taste (if they last till the next day, you will tell that they taste even better)
