Why Chocolate Chunk And Not Chocolate Chip?
Honestly, you can choose either or. I just didn’t have chocolate chips at hand but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from fulfilling my cookie cravings. I had a few bars of chocolate in the pantry (as one does). Roughly chop up a bar of chocolate and throw it into the mix.

What Ingredients Do I Need?
For these chocolate chunk cookies, you will need the most basic of ingredients really.
- Butter: Make sure it is either melted or at room temperature. Room temperature butter will give you fluffier cookies while melted butter will give you a denser texture. If you’re feeling extra fanciful (like I was) then you can also brown your butter.
- Sugar: Ideally, opt for brown sugar. It adds more flavor and texture, but if you don’t have brown sugar, regular sugar works just fine. Brown sugar gives your cookies more chew, while regular sugar gives them more crunch. You can also go halfsies and mix the two.
- Egg: Since this is a single-serve recipe, you don’t need a whole egg. You can either use just the yolk or whisk your egg in a separate bowl and use 2 tablespoons of beaten egg for your cookies.
- Salt: If you’re using salted butter, you don’t need to add salt. If you’re using unsalted butter, adding a pinch of salt definitely adds depth to the flavor profile.
- Baking Soda: Be sure not to swap this for baking powder. Baking powder will give you a cakier cookie, but baking soda gives you that delightful crumble.
- Vanilla Extract: Just a few drops will do.
- Flour: I used all-purpose flour (plain flour).
- Chocolate: Chocolate chips are great. You can also chop up your favorite chocolate bar and add it instead. I went with a bar of milk chocolate.
How Many Chocolate Chunk Cookies Are In This Recipe?
This recipe is specifically a single-serve recipe. Shoutout to everyone living alone! But, this recipe gives you two gorgeous large cookies (three if you’re trying to go for an average sized cookie) which makes it perfect for you or if you’d like to share the joy of these cookies with someone else.
Tips For The Perfect Chocolate Chunk Cookies
- Do Not Overmix: Mix your cookie dough until it just comes together and there’s no white flour or crumbly residue around the bowl. You don’t want to overmix your dough, it will result in tough cookies.
- Underbaking: Your cookies should still be soft when you take them out of the oven. They continue cooking through with the residual heat. If you bake them until they are firm, you will quickly realize your mistake when they harden to a rock as they cool. 9-10 minutes in the oven is all you need.
- Oh No! My Dough Is Too Hard: Listen, I know that if your measurements are not super precise, then things can go south. If you find your dough is too hard or isn’t coming together, either add 1 more tablespoon of butter OR 1 more tablespoon of beaten egg.
