Saffron Iced Latte

We know Mondays can be the worst and we all need our coffee in the morning. So why not make an indulgently luxurious saffron iced latte to start the day off on a great note?

The best thing about having a Persian housemate (or at least, one of the best things) is the saffron. There are so many varieties of saffron in our home, in various jars, and in plenty of different quantities…. So let’s get right into making a saffron iced latte. Fancy, I KNOW!

Angus Wan (@cuppabeans) made me do it and I’m so glad I did. When I make this again, I will definitely let my saffron bloom for longer than 15 seconds. I was excited and I was also running out of daylight to film. Excuse me, I’m just a girl!

What Makes Saffron So Special?

Often referred to as “red gold,” saffron is one of the most prized spices in the world. It is harvested from the delicate stigmas of crocus flowers and requires immense labor to produce even a small amount, which explains its premium price. There are varieties to it as well with the original Persian Saffron being the highest priced and the best quality. But luxury aside, saffron is a powerhouse of flavor and aroma.

Blooming saffron correctly is very important otherwise you miss out on the chance of extracting all the warm, earthy taste with subtle floral and honey-like notes. It’s such a unique herb that makes for an excellent choice in both savory and sweet recipes. And don’t even get me started on its gorgeous natural pigment – a vibrant golden-yellow hue that’s nothing short of mesmerizing in a glass of iced latte.

Why Ice-Blooming Is The Best

Traditionally, saffron is bloomed in hot water, but for this iced latte, we’re using ice instead. This unconventional method might sound odd, but it works wonders. As the ice melts, the saffron slowly releases its color and flavor into the water, resulting in a more vibrant and balanced extract. The gradual process ensures that no bitterness creeps in, allowing the spice’s delicate notes to shine.

Plus, let’s be real—there’s something inherently cool about blooming saffron with ice. It’s a small detail that makes the entire process feel even more luxurious. Even though I didn’t get the same strong yellow color as Angus did, I definitely got all the earthy flavors from the saffron. This iced latte tastes like matcha’s second cousin to be honest.

What You Need For This Recipe

Making this saffron iced latte at home is surprisingly simple! Here’s everything you’ll need to create this luxurious coffee drink:

  • Saffron Threads: Opt for high-quality Persian saffron for the best flavor and vibrant color.
  • Espresso: A shot (or two) of your favorite espresso, freshly brewed.
  • Milk: Regular, almond, oat, or any milk of your choice.
  • Ice Cubes: Essential for blooming saffron and chilling the latte.
  • Optional Toppings: Whipped cream or a sprinkle of crushed saffron for an extra indulgent touch.

As for the tools you will need to prepare this drink:

  • Mortar and Pestle: To crush the saffron threads and release their flavor.

  • Coffee Maker: To brew the espresso (or use instant espresso if that’s your style).

Customizing Your Saffron Iced Latte

One of the best things about the Saffron Iced Latte is how customizable it is. Whether you’re a fan of plant-based milks or prefer an extra touch of sweetness, this drink adapts to your preferences.

  • Make It Vegan: Use almond or oat milk and skip the whipped cream.
  • Extra Sweetness: Add a drizzle of honey or simple syrup.
  • Spice It Up: Sprinkle a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon on top for a Middle Eastern twist.
  • Decaf It: Replace regular espresso with decaf coffee for a caffeine-free treat.

What To Pair With Your Saffron Iced Latte

A drink this special deserves an equally indulgent pairing. If you’re looking for a royal experience (or some self pampering), try:

  • Baklava: The nutty sweetness complements the floral notes of saffron.
  • Shortbread Cookies: Their buttery texture pairs perfectly with the creamy latte.
  • Pistachio Ice Cream: A cool, nutty treat to enjoy with your iced coffee.
